I thought I'd start a new thread as I have a particular question...hope it's o.k. with you all. Anyway, I'm not used to getting personal with strangers online, but here goes...
I'm somewhat reluctant to try these smoothies I've been reading about here, because (1) my digestion is way out of whack and I'm afraid to cause further problems with it, and (2) I know this isn't quite the same thing, but I tried two tiny sips about 1-1/2 yrs. ago of some home-juiced carrot juice and immediately got pain and discomfort in my stomach...later I had some gas. (Yet, I can eat a raw carrot.) Ever since, I've shied away from home-juiced anything.
So, any input regarding the above or whatever else comes to mind would be most welcome. Also, any suggestions of what ingredients to use to start R-E-A-L slow at incorporating smoothies into my diet?
Thanks in advance.

kd, I would still suggest fresh raw carrot juice, but try diluting it with water. If you have a sensitive system, diluting can help. Also, if you like orange or grapefruit, juice those (with a citrus juicer) and consume that. Another thing, if you can eat bananas and berries and pineapple, making a smoothie out of them isn't going to be much different than eating them save for the fact that they are already "broken down" in terms of size of pieces. So, that shouldn't be a problem. Some smoothies with the greens can take a little getting used to, especially if you use too many greens. Go slow. Get used to a fruit smoothie that you like, then try putting a little greenery in it. Just to see how you take it. I like using bananas, pineapple and black berries. It is a nice, sweet, flavorful smoothie. If you put a little water in it, stick in the freezer for an hour or so, it is like eating soft ice cream, but without the junk. These don't have to be extravagant. Just tasty and convenient. Did you get a chance to look at my website at gardenariantimes.googlepages.com yet? I am curious as to what you thought of my starting this up...since you helped encourage me. Tim

Hi kd, I find beetroot juice has the same effect on me and can not think of a good reason for you to force it down! The only proviso I guess is there is a chance that the carrots had some sort of contaminant that you are particularly sensitive to and so you might want to 'risk' it again. Seriously though, carrot juice is nice and all, but probably not worth making yourself sick for.
The thing with smoothies though is that you put the whole fruit or veg in; it's not really a job for your juicer. So, I wouldn't bother juicing oranges or anything, I'd just whack the whole lot in the blender with a bit of water to make the blades turn. Even though most people can stomach juices ok, the added fibre and nutrients of the whole fruit is a lot more satisfying and instead of drinking the (quite sugary) juice of 8 oranges you'd only ending up having 2 or three, with no loss in the taste department.
I have a mix of veg and fruit in my smoothies (there are loads of ideas for that in other threads here). If you can stomach it whole and raw, you're probably going to manage it blended up with a bit of water. If you've got a high speed blender then you could probably even chop a carrot into them, if you're determined to enjoy the carrot in liquid form. But there are so many gorgeous fruit and veg to choose from, why force down one that you are frightened of becoming ill from?

Hey KD, It sounds to me as if you may have a Candidas yeast problem. The yeast react strongly to fuit and vegetable juices and they ferment and release gas when they die. Poeple think they have a 'senisitive system' when in reality they are overrun by yeast. Try a Candidas cleanse like Candi-Gone. Eat lots of garlic and cabbage--it kills the yeast. I also have a paper on getting rid of Candidas I can send you if you give me your email address. This has worked for me and a lot of people I know. Good luck!
