Great! I thought I was alone on this. Green smoothies are good for transition to a raw state. Here is another smoothie to try right out of the Raw Diva manual: 4 mangos 1 pint rasberry greens of your choice water Directions: Blend mangos with the water, add in the rasberries and the greens, blend until smooth. Good greens to use: sweet lettuce, spinich, mixed baby greens, and or romaine lettuce. 500 cals Bon appitete!

Hi All, Green smoothies have been my greatest joy during this raw food journey. My favorite is 2 cups water, 1 cup mango chunks, 1 cup pineapple, 2 bananas, and 2 cups of spinach or mache. Very satisfying to my taste buds. This has been a great time for me. Thank you.

Another favorite food for me has been the raw soups. I have tried three these past few weeks. I usually make them for me and my husband needs them heated so I lightly heat them for him. I know he is still getting a good food.

I base almost all of my smoothies on bananas and I've learned to be careful about food combining. I usually have at least two a day. When I use romaine, I don't usually mix in any other fruit besides the bananas (I use three or four with a head of romaine plus enough water to blend). When I use spinach, I'll put in a cup of blueberries or mango. I stop at bananas plus one other fruit. Much easier to digest if I don't go overboard on the variety.

Has anyone ever had any adverse reaction to the green smoothies?? I would really like my 10 year son to have them, but he always ends up with terrible tummy pains and then vomits it all up. I don't make them overly strong...I don't think. About a TBSP of spirulina to a large blender jug full of smoothie. I now have the barley greens mixture but am too scared to try it on him. He gets really sick straight away. Anyone have any words of experience here? Any advice?

Does your son have that reaction when you don't put the spirulina in the smoothie? If so, it is not necessarily that ingredient. If he doesn't, then it probably is the spirulina. I would suggest trying a very much smaller amount if you really want him to have that in the smoothie. On the other hand, using lettuce and spinach instead of the "superfood" is a good choice. Better to have some of the benefits of "green" than to spit it all back up at you, don't you think?

Hi Tim, he is fine if I don't put the spirulina in. I don't know if I could get away with putting leafy greens in yet (truth be known...until the 21 day challenge started I'd never heard of putting leafy greens in a smoothie). Just the look of green smoothies scare him off because of his experiences with them. It's a shame. I really want to get some decent food in that boy...hence my fussing about this. Part of the 21 day challenge for me is to get my family onto approx. 75% raw. It's a work in progress. But in the meantime anything healthy that I can sneak into my kids the better. Maybe I should try using lettuce; it just doesn't seem such a nutritious choice.

If he ins't much into eating lettuce now, putting some in the smoothie is an improvement. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a young fella's interest in healthy food. Hey, if you are able to get the fruit smoothie (Banana, pineapple, black or blueberries, etc) in him, you are doing well... Think of the junk he could be eating instead. At least he would be getting fruit. One thing you might want to do is NOT tell him you are putting the lettuce in it or calling it a "green smoothie." I used to refer to them as fruit smoothies to my daughter when she was little. Of course, I didn't think, back then, to put the lettuce or other things in them as I do now. In any case, I hope your son at least gets the fruit; that is a start.
By the way, from what you say, it sounds like there is a visceral reaction (and maybe a mental one, too) to the spirulina. Probably should leave it out for now. Better to eat the raw fruit smoothies "naked" than to have them spit back you...

Hi, I was drinking a quart of green smoothies a day for a while and certainly did not notice my gray hairs turning blonde again. As a matter of fact, I got more gray and my eyes got worse too How long of drinking green smoothies every day did everyone notice a change. I am 100% raw for 9 months now, but I slacked off on the green smoothies a while ago. Thanks for any replies, Debbie

My vision was noticeably better in about 2 weeks or so. That is when I realized I didn't need my reading glasses. I don't know if I attribute it to the green smoothies or the revamping of my eating mostly raw in general. I am happy about it regardless of the actual cause.

Hi Debbie, I noticed my grey hairs regrowing dark again after just a few months. Some people think it has something to do with the brewers yeast I used in my smoothies. Purist raw foodists may not agree with using it though. I reckon it is the combination of everything I used. It was subtle, rather than dramatic (I don't have a lot of grey anyway - but still enough to panic about!!), but all the same they were definitely growing back dark again. Are you under a lot of stress? Highly strung? Rushing around madly all the time and not recharging your batteries? I also clearly remember my mother stressing about her grey hairs when I was in my teens and lived at home. She's been through huge stresses, cancer (she refused chemo though) etc. She really cleaned up her diet and life, and now in her sixties she looks like she dyes her hair!! She isn't even on a raw food diet (prob. about 60% raw) and she halted her greying hair. I think it took a few years for her to halt the greying. Keep at it Debbie...just be sure you doing the raw diet in a balanced way as Frederic talks about. Hope this doesn't sound like a serious lecture I don't mean it to sound like it. I'm probably just too much of a 'there has to be an answer to this' kind of person!

Hi Debbie, I have read that health in general has a lot to do with assimilation and elimination. It seems like a wise idea. So assimilation of minerals would have a lot to do with hair color, etc. I do pretty well with green smoothies, although sometimes I have stomach "rumblings" after drinking one. Do you think your assimilation is good? I have an issue with food combining on a raw diet (which I'm doing now). I tend to want more of a "party"--like a sthingyful of almond butter on my banana, or a meal that includes both nuts and avocado. Even in moderation this is not a perfect plan for me. I have some bloating and not much weight loss. I'm trying to stick more to Fred's ideas Last fall for 2 months I went to tend to my 93 yr old aunt. She fractured her hip and couldn't move hardly at all. I was lifting her 105 lbs. and putting most of my attention to her health. I began to notice that my grey hairs had disappeared! Now I'm back in Nashville and to my usual routine and I see the grey hairs coming back even though I'm on a 100% raw foods diet now. So--assimilation, elimination, state of mind--they all play a part in health... Good luck!
