I started this partly in response to a comment in the green smoothie post below. Hope thats okay, I just wasn't sure if it was appropriate to do this as a reply below...didn't want to hijack the post. Okay...to the point. What ingredients do you all like to use? Going by what I have been just learning mine is probably a poor combination of fruits...but is all I have known. I use 2 freshly juiced apples and 1 freshly juiced orange; flax seed oil, lecithin, brewers yeast, green food powder, and a banana. Sometimes I'll blend in chunks of fresh coconut. The coconut makes it look like concrete mix, but it is great for cleansing out the bowels!!! I haven't tried anything else.

I'm probably not very imaginative as my favourite is simply 2 bananas and 1 mango with 100g (that's about 3 ounces) of greens. I usually use spinach or rucola, as not much else is available at prices that I can afford. Gives a nice green colour ;-)
I have experimented with blending in some celery and actually liked it, even though I normally don't like celery.

The idea of using greens in a smoothie is totally new to me. How much does it alter the taste of the smoothie? Spinach is one of those foods that I'm not sure whether I like it or not. Does it have a very strong flavour in a smoothie?

suz,
it does taste a tad spinach-y ;-) I actually prefer rucola in my smoothies. But you can get it to taste more fruity by using only one banana and two mangoes, for example and fewer greens to start out with.

Suz,
I found the same problem. I suppose the thing to do is to either a) not use too many greens at one time or b) use some berries to help "overwhelm" the "green" aroma. It doesn't totally irradicate the flavor, but it puts it in the background, so to speak. I certainly don't like my "milk shake replacements" tasting like a salad... ha!

We love our green smoothies, have one every day for breakfast. I find kale or spinach are the best greens to use and not loose the flavor of the fruit. Try 4 kale leaves (remove center spine), banana, slice fresh pinapple, apple and water. Makes a lovely creamy very bright green sweet and tasty smoothie. I use a vita mix and would not go any where with out it. I think mine has its own passport...it has been all over Mexico and Costa Rica. I also use Nano Greens a very powerful green powder. Love this stuff!!!

Reading your posts on green smoothies makes me wander if I am using too much greens. Is it possible to drink too much greens at a time? My favorite green smoothie is half a blender full of kale or green leaf lettuce, two stalks of celery, three green onions, hand full of spinach, hand full of parsley, two cloves of garlic,1/2 bell pepper, two tomatoes, 1 1/2 tsps. sea salt, and water. I know it's yummy to me, but I may start turning green soon. You think?

Time for me to get rid of my preconceived ideas on what I think a smoothie should be! I always thought of a smoothie as sweet/fruity drink ;D. I'm going to give leafy greens a go. I've never heard of rucola here in NZ, but then again the produce variety where I live is pathetic at it's best. This is actually a great time for me to try new things out - it's the middle of summer here and this year most produce is actually cheap. Thanks for the new ideas.

cgraphologist, did you really mean 1 1/2 teas of sea salt.....seem like alot to me. Have you tried adding lime or lemon juice? I add them to most of my smoothies savory or fruity, really kicks up the flavor.

Oh, I envy you It's freezing outside here and fruits is so expensive at the moment. You might have heard of rucola as rocket(salad) or arugula.

I LOVE my Green Smoothies everyday! I use a handful of organic spinach; 2 large organic collard leaves (without the vein); 3 organic leaves of kale (without the vein); handful of organic dandelions leaves; 2 bananas; 1 mango; pineapple; kiwi; and an apple. In my Vitamix I first mix the greens with water to make sure the collards and spinach are creamy, and then I add all the fruit. This makes a blender full so I can have one for breakfast and another later in the day for a "pick-me-up" snack. Delicious!!! PS....Don't let the green color keep you from trying this as you really don't taste the vegetables!

sheepmobile - rocket...ah yes, now I do know what that is. Too well!!! After criticizing my town for it's lack of variety ;D I confess I have a problem with rocket in my garden (and everywhere else it shouldn't be growing). Well, there's only one thing to do with it now isn't there Dandelion leaves - those of you who use it; don't you find it bitter tasting? I tried a teeny piece once and found it to be extremely bitter; or is there something I did wrong?

I also just posted on another green smoothe thread, but I drink one every day!
I vary the greens between spinach, kale, dandelion (which is one of my faves), kale, collard, leaf lettuce, and chard and I mix with a variety of fruits, whatever I have on hand - pears, apples, oranges, grapes, pineapple, mango, berries - but I always put in 1/2 a frozen banana.
It makes a big difference if you really blend the smoothie until it is SMOOTH - should be liquidy.
YUM!
